I know which way they should go but I don't have any input there.Most notably, production dates have been penciled or stamped on the butt end of the heel of the neck of most guitars and basses, although there were periods when this was not consistently done 1973 to 1981, for example or simply omitted.It really isn't a 1963 or 1959 or 1988 or 2004 until you get in appraised by someone who knows what to look for.Seems dumb to me that Fender would not stamp both the neck and body with the serial number since they are interchangeable and instead uses the heel plate as the identifier.Hit the jump to see just how old that guitar or bass really is.
